Oakvale Pinot Noir Rosé 2024

If you’re looking for a rosé with intrigue – something a little different, elegant, and quietly confident – Oakvale Rosé delivers a medley of citrus sunshine with just a whisper of red fruit and a saline thread for that final lift.

Oakvale Rosé is intrigue in a glass. Subtle yet expressive, it comes alive with aromas and texture, carrying a mouthwatering line of tangerine zest and cherry that works beautifully with food, or stands perfectly on its own.

The wine makes you smile – it’s pale cantaloupe hue, with delicate coral flecks, hints at a wine that is lightfooted and dynamic yet full of flavour surprises. Swirling the glass, the colour almost appears white, its brilliant blush catching the light. The generous aromas offer an unfolding story: a spring bouquet of orange blossom, tangerine zest, nectarine, and lime, laced with yellow plum, grapefruit, pear, and a glossy green-citrus lift. Behind this citrus medley is a gentle backdrop of red fruit – redcurrant and pomegranate – with a subtle hint of musk, the herbal snap of fennel, and the cool hush of wet riverstones.

On the palate, the wine is dry, yet a hint of perceived sweetness is coaxed out by supple texture, allowing ripe, fleshy fruit to come alive. A lively acidity threads poise through the wine, leaving a cucumber-like freshness and a saline twist that adds lift. Flavours echo the nose but with greater definition – subtle cherry alongside orange zest, watermelon, and delicate florals – all carried by just enough grip to draw a crisp, mouthwatering line.

Cool, refreshing and energetic, this rosé is sleek with well judged texture that gives both interest and staying power. It’s a style that speaks of clarity – more citrus-driven than red-fruited, it delivers an enticing and slightly unexpected edge. The finish is tangy and mouth-coating with a saline trail giving that final push in length. Delicious.

Finish: Medium-plus finish with tangy, mouth-coating persistence.

Quality Assessment and Conclusion

A beautiful balance between aromas and flavours, delivering exactly what it promises. The interplay of fruit sweetness and acidity creates an inviting tension that holds interest. Sans oak and without extensive lees contact, the wine relies on fruit purity and freshness for length. While not especially persistent, it has sufficient staying power to engage and coat the palate, achieved through attention and detail to fruit and acidity. The breadth of aromas – including unusual citrus-leaning notes – sets it apart in the rosé category: sleek, modern, and elegant. Complexity is present without being overt; the wine carries itself with grace and clear intent.

We eat with our eyes – so picture a perfectly seared cut of fresh tuna topped with grapefruit and mint salsa. Pour a glass of Oakvale Rosé and it all clicks: the wine’s citrus core meets the brightness of the grapefruit, while fresh mint layers in a herbal edge that plays in tandem with the wine’s saline finish, sharpening the tangy lift.

Keep summer simple with Oakvale Rosé and a watermelon and feta salad scattered with basil and lime. The fruit in the wine mirrors the watermelon’s juiciness, basil brings unmistakable aromatic lift, and lime draws out its crisp, refreshing line.

Oakvale Chardonnay

The Oakvale Chardonnay greets with intentional elegance – ripe yet restrained, its aroma a medley of florals and citrus unfolding slowly with a creamy edge in the glass.

This is Chardonnay as Franschhoek does it best: sun-kissed fruit held in balance by saline freshness, mineral poise, and a welcoming scent of florals, spice, and citrus zest.

Every sip is a study in texture: silk, subtle grip, and a lingering trail that invites you to take your time.

A vibrant jasmine–lemon hue draws you in – beautiful to look at, with an unrushed gentleness that asks you to slow down with it. This is a layered Chardonnay, a flagbearer for Franschhoek with its ripe yet restrained personality. While it gives freely, it also holds back, and that’s where much of its allure lies.

The nose opens with a perfume of elderflower, jasmine, and honeysuckle, the posy tied with a satin string of luminous lime and green pineapple.

Creamy fruit flavours weave into nectarine, apricot, quince, kumquat and orange peel with a delicate scent of vanilla pod and lemon candy drops – none dominating, each a thread in a gauzy veil of aromas. Careful attention in the vineyard, winemaking, and barrel selection has stirred these nuances, lifting them with a neatly edged breeze of cotton.

Given time, it unfolds further with almond, white chocolate, cinnamon, and lemon pie, creating aromatic textures.

On the palate, the wine keeps its composure, and the first sip lingers with waves of sun-kissed fruit in a dry frame. The wine engulfs the palate in a textural spectacle of silk and subtle grip with a spicy layer dusting the fruit. There’s a saline trail that pulls everything together, balanced by a mineral gloss and a savoury tug. Moreish and mindfully composed, it communicates its site judiciously and leaves a stillness after all this – a space to breathe and enjoy the wine’s complexity. Effortless persistence and the poise to age, becoming even more luxurious in time without added weight.

Quality Assessment and Conclusion

A delicate balance is achieved between oak and fruit, almost sensuous. Ripe fruit is held in check by a creamy edge, with acidity serving as much a structural component as the oak. Length is achieved through a careful acid–fruit–oak relationship, each element playing a role in rounding out the palate. Fruit intensity carries from nose to palate, with complexity lying in the subtleties and effortless quality of the wine. Bright, elegant, and moreish, unfussy yet complete and sophisticated.

Equally at home at a white-tablecloth dinner or a relaxed meal, this Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roast chicken, tarragon, and preserved lemon. The creaminess of the wine folds into the tender meat, while tarragon and lemon amplify its bright, layered citrus core – elevating a simple roast to something memorable.

Don’t reserve this Chardonnay for the main course alone. Serve it with grilled peach halves, thyme, and whipped ricotta, and enjoy how the wine’s fruit mirrors the sweetness of the peach. Fresh thyme lifts the citrus and floral notes, giving the finish neat precision.
